walkingshadow: nihilistic thumbs up!! (dw: we can live beside the ocean)
to follow up: yes! i did find my way out of decatur! i ended up doubling back and disregarding both sets of directions, and then stumbling on a ross and a target just down the street from the house. so i did get shoes! they're not very pretty and they don't fit particularly well, but they do meet the minimum requirements.

i've been scrambling around, super-busy, for the past week, just settling in—little things, like unpacking and finding shoes to wear to the office, pricing gym memberships and advising everyone who sends me a bill every month that they now need to send it to a different location.

we spent this past memorial day weekend at a cabin on a lake about an hour north of the city. a CABIN. made of WOOD. on a LAKE. i did not know this, but there is apparently a law mandating representations of ducks, dogs, fish, and deer (minimum of two, bonus points for all of them together) in every room of a cabin on a lake, plus WELCOME TO THE CABIN/LAKE signs visible from any vantage point. but when you got over the decorations, it was a really nice place. it wasn't enormous, but it was made almost entirely of bedrooms—eleven of us slept there comfortablyl creatively, but comfortably. we grilled on the deck for dinner (and then shoved everything in the dishwasher when we were done) and made sandwiches for lunch and ate fifteen kinds of cookies in three days. we rented kayaks and a canoe to paddle around the lake, and when that was too much work, we dangled our feet in the water off the dock and drank cider and beer in the hot, hot sun. i came back with patches of sunburn: a two-inch square on my left foot, half-inch stripes on my shoulders, the tops of my thighs.

when everyone went to work today, i ran errands (see above); and tonight c. had me come over for a crash course in litigation and how to organize it in filing cabinets. it doesn't seem too difficult, and it'll all be clearer once i see it in action. they're paying me a pittance, but i have absolutely no experience, so i suppose it evens out.
