we can't be silent

Would I pass up an icon meme? Come, now. Last seen in the journal of [livejournal.com profile] marythefan.

What is your default icon?

keywords: in college you know who you are
Self-mocking careeritis! Throwing open his arms and shouting to the heavens! With his little tie billowing in the wind! Like it matters. So appropriate, I cannot stand it.

Oldest icon in use:

keywords: what color is the sky in your world?
It's the punchline to a Stephen Wright joke: A friend of mine once sent me a postcard with a picture of the entire planet Earth taken from space. On the back it said, "Wish you were here." Sometimes for posting about things going on in my neck of the woods that are worth being proud about, but mostly for when people don't seem to be living on the same planet as the rest of us. By which I mean "me."

Newest icon:

keywords: the lexicalization of typos! (who wouldn't get excited?)
Slapped this one together a few weeks ago in celebration of netspeak and in honor of the linguistics paper (which E. gave an A, the poor man). Must make new icons with all this free time!

Favorite icon in use made by someone else:

by [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun
keywords: sit back relax enjoy the war
A while back, Punk made a whole set of icons joining lyrics from They Might Be Giant's Flood to art from Forsaken and bid us all take and use them as we would. This one is such a great matching of picture to caption, so bitter and pointed, and I wish I had more things to say about politics, because this icon doesn't get used enough. Okay wait, here's something: my favorite person of the week was the judge who on Tuesday declared a thirteen-year-old girl's right to have an abortion if she wanted to: she's been a ward of DCF for most if not all of her life and they were up in arms trying to stop her from getting one—but in Florida a minor can have an abortion without notifying her parents/guardian, and the judge ruled decisively that DCF had absolutely no jurisdiction in the matter. He said that the law was very clear: legally, the decision was simple; the moral decision was difficult—but it wasn't his job to make the moral decision. I could have kissed him.

Favorite icon in use made by you?

keywords: he said "the world is as soft as lace"
. . . but I don't love anyone. [livejournal.com profile] saturn92103 asked about this icon when the ask-me-about-my-icons! meme went around, and I said this: The band Belle & Sebastian, whom I love, have a song and an EP called Jonathan David, and the picture in this icon isn't the cover of that EP, but it's from the same shoot. I use it to talk about music, and I also love the mood of it, and the story that seems to be going on in it: some kind of defiance, detachment, betrayal, a general sense of "fuck-off" or maybe just "whatever." I feel like there's a lot going on. Plus I love the colors. (The keywords are from another B&S song.)

Icon you use to impress strangers with your braininess/charm/bleeding edge cool:

keywords: wiiings!
I don't think I can quite pull of BLEEDING EDGE COOL, but people love this icon. So happy!

Now you play!

Which of my icons is your favorite?

You want to know what's sad in an almost amusing way? I've actually tried to figure out which of your icons is my favorite before. In the end, I always conclude that what makes me go 'ooh! so shiny!' isn't just the high quality of the icons [tho that helps a great deal], it's the combination of keyword-to-icon that you've got going on. [I am such a dork. *facepalm*]

Anyway. My two favorite of your icons [because I've had a hell of a time narrowing it down to two, don't ask for one.] are this one (http://www.livejournal.com/userpic/25874701/477401) and this one (http://www.livejournal.com/userpic/25953672/477401). =P And after I nattered on about keywords, these two are both based on the images and the words used within. The first is possibly the most perfect Harry Potter icon I can think of [god, the grimness and the knowing that it just keeps going makes my soul tremble.] and I just Love It. The second one makes me smile every time I see you use it, to me it just radiates this profound euphoria at being alive.

...and for the record, my favorite keyword to icon combo is Harry/"and the earth did not devour him" because DUDE. *nod*

I shall now stop babbling at you. :)

Whee, thank you! As I think I've confessed before, I'm slightly obsessed with icon keywords, so I self-actualize a little bit every time you say you like them. I am easy that way, like unto Sunday morning.

The "any world" icon is from some gettyimages.com picture that just looked wide open; the lyrics are from Duran Duran's "Ordinary World," of course, this gut-wrenching song about clawing your way back to the land of the living and moving on, so. I like doing that, taking lyrics out of context and appropriating them for my own purposes, though the source lurks in the background.

As for Harry! Harry, Harry, Harry. It's just so fucking tragic, and nobody does doom and dread like T. S. Eliot. And the earth did not devour him are, I think, my all-time favorite keywords too. It's the title of a Spanish-language book I know nothing about.

Never stop babbling about icons! God knows I never do. *g*

dude. making me choose between your icons is cruel and unusual. they're all so incredible! but if i absolutely must, i say this one (http://www.livejournal.com/userpic/20611538/477401) (even though you hardly use it!). because after all this time, it still makes me laugh out loud. just, the look on his face, and it's so *true*. it kills me.

also, it has been a good day for our puppies: This One's for You (http://www.livejournal.com/users/thistlefics/15416.html), by [livejournal.com profile] thistlefics, and Bertie McGumpher and a Case of the Jollies (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sheafrotherdon/39318.html?style=mine), by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon. there's more fic, somewhere. i'll give you links once i find them again.

how are you enjoying your life of leisure? you should come online more often -- i miss you!

But that is me in a nutshell! Cruel! And unusual! :-p I love that one of Harry too omg. He's English! He doesn't need affection, dammit! He needs TEA.

Recs for meeeee. *dances the recs dance* Will read them tomorrow and report back! My life of leisure is straddling the leisurely/BORING line; it's almost time to job hunt (*weeps*). I will try to be online more, and also to employ that newfangled phone thing which I have been very bad about using. Because I miss you too, kid.
