You make my glottal stop.
Virtual chocolates go to
silentfire for recently donning the cape and mask of the Phantom Reccer and pointing me to this post-war story where Draco puts Harry back together and there are SANDCASTLES, and for leaving a snarky valentine in my journal that made me laugh until I hurt myself. Good chocolates too, none of your milk-chocolate cardboard lollipops.
I met with E. after African History today (and apparently we have a midterm in there on Friday; on Thursday the LAH take-home essay is due; yay?), and in twenty minutes we carved up the next ten weeks until graduation into dates for turning in 1) a bibliography, 2) a database of collected samples, 3) an outline, and 4) TEH PAPER. It sounds . . . so possible. He was like, you're pretty much on your own, because it's not that I'm not interested in chatting, but it's completely outside my field of interest. And I was like, I gotcha! So unless I run into problems, I should just read everything I can find on emotes (having decided that focusing on one particular phenomenon was a Good Thing) and collect representative and novel forms of them, for purposes of coming to conclusions about them. Which I should then write about.
Related goals: 1) Do not completely implode. Full stop.
Tomorrow I will dart across campus getting various forms signed and stamped, and then, one day soon, the flipping scholarship money will rain down from the Honors office and appease the petty bureaucracy.
megolas had the fabulous idea of creating a stripped-down user account on her computer to use when she was trying to get work done. I went and created an account for "Studious Like a Studious Thing" (login: study, password: study), with a simple Finder and a modified dock that includes four or five applicationsmost importantly MS Word (evil though it may be) and Safari, as I'm going to need the internets for stuffbut there will be no fannish bookmarks, no Photoshop, no games, no mail (unless I actively go checking for it), and no iTunes library. Instead, here's the current Ephemeral Mix I'm about to burn for just such studious purposes. All links are yousendit.
Modest Mouse - Float On I love Modest Mouse, but you already knew that. I love the flow of it, how liquid and malleable his words are, like there are no boundaries between them, not even the usual imaginary ones. And it's so hopeful and outward-lookingwe'll float on, good news is on the way. Over winter break,
gjstruthseeker came over one night and sat up in my kitchen trying to beat some sense into her writers while I crocheted and we both listened to this song on infinite repeat.
Scissor Sisters vs. The Beatles vs. George Michael vs. Aretha Franklin - No One Takes Your Freedom Cracktastic mash-up, seamlessly put together.
Motion City Soundtrack - The Future Freaks Me Out Anxiety and pop culture in the 21st century. Awesome.
Betty won’t stop listening to modern rock
How she hates to be alone
I try to compensate her lack of love with coffee cake
Ice cream and a bottle of ten dollar wine she says hey
I rock the Haro sport
I rock the cow girl blues
I rock too fast for love I'm footloose in my Velcro shoes
What's up with Will and Grace?
I don't get drum and bass
The future freaks me out
Busted - Year 3000 I put this up a little while ago; obscenely catchy. He's been to the year 3000! Not much has changed, but they lived underwater! And people reproduce every 200 years! (Okay, that's a bit of my own interpretation, but I don't see many ways around it.)
Wilco - California Stars (Live) Cool and mellow. Wilco is creeping up on me.
The Earlies - Wayward Song Courtesy of
ciderpress a couple of weeks ago. I said it was smooth and cool and shiny and creates the illusion of depth, like a sound tunnel stretching off into the distance.
Velvet Underground - Venus In Furs SHINY, SHINY, SHINY BOOTS OF LEATHER. With some kind of stringed instrumentI don't know what. And a tambourine. In my head, this kept getting wound up with the Hare Krishna chanting. I could sleep for a thousand years.
Soul Kid #1 - More Bounce (In California) We got more bounce in California than all y'all combined. More smooth than . . . bouncy. I've heard this was on The O.C.? I don't know. But it's awesome!
The Congregation of Vapors - With Love From America Talked about this one at length here. I'll make you just like me.
Sage Francis - Makeshift Patriot Politically raptastic.
There is a new price on freedom, so buy into it while supplies last.
Changes need to be made:
no more curbside baggage,
seven p.m. curfew,
racial profiling will continue with less bitching.
We've unified over who to kill,
so until I find more relevant Scripture to quote, remember,
our kind is bigger, stronger, smarter, and much wealthier.
So wave those flags with pride, especially the white part.
Rufus Wainwright - Ups & Downs I have it labeled as a "Studio Version," but I don't know what that means. He should hum all the time. Mmmm. Fantastic beat.
Belle & Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher Quiet and dreamy, but a fast, flowing pace. Wordy.
Snow Patrol - Chocolate
You're the only thing that I love
It scares me more every day
On my knees I think clearer
The Arrogant Worms - I Ran Away Ahahaha! No, really. No. Really.
The Weakerthans - One Great City! Acoustic, simple, beautiful.
Late afternoon, another day is nearly done
A darker gray is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the Underground
That hollow hurrying sound
of feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store
a clerk is closing up
And counting loonies trying not to say,
"I hate Winnipeg"
Concrete Blonde - Tomorrow, Wendy It's pretty, okay? Really, really pretty. I have no idea who Wendy is or why she's going to die, or how we know she's going to die but can't actually do anything about it; it has something to do with God and His letting us down, about which we are v. bitter.
The Eels - Grace Kelly Blues I hear this song and think of sunlightbright, midday sunlight washing over the stones of the streets and buildings, warming and whitening them.
The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
I got SOUL but I'm not a soldier.
I woke up this morning and could BREATHE. The cough is still hanging around, and I still sound like I have a cold, plus I am still very, very tired, so I won't be getting back to the gym todayand maybe not tomorrow either. Also tomorrow: Publix, readings, and getting together with ANT people re: Wednesday's assignment. It shouldn't be difficult, but it should still be done. In barely-related-but-any-time-is-a-good-time-for-ego-stroking news, the ANT prof awarded me full points for the Hare Krishnas:
While you had a different approach than the assignment called for (selecting a single person) you did a great job with this assignment. I can tell you not only put in the necessary time photographing, but that you also made an effort to see things from their perspective. I really like the variety of images and angles. I am not sure you need the books shot, but it does seem to add another piece of information about the Krishna. You have a great attention to detail and framing in these images. Very nice.
The pictures are here. For what it's worth.
