I got SOUL but I'm not a soldier

Last night I took the NyQuil and kept typing, so it was a little while before I got up to head to the kitchen, at which point I realized they were right in warning me away from operating heavy machinery. Whooooo. I heated up a frozen dinner and exchanged comments with people on netspeak conventions and THE ARCHER, and then I fell into bed. The drugs eventually, finally kicked in, and I could breathe, and I slept and slept. I woke up several times reaching for tissues, and at least twice I came out of a dream trying to tie myself into an actual knot (and incredibly confused when I couldn't manage it), but managed to sleep past 11:30 this morning. I just barely missed the posting of Chapter 38 last night. I have since read it.

Oh, such a tease of a chapter, because everybody's tensing before SOMETHING BIG happens. Will they run? Orlando thinks they should stay and take on the whole motherfucking Organization, Eric said they could run for a bit, but eventually they'll have to turn and fight, and Viggo thinks they should run. Viggo wants control back. Oooh.

Sean and Orlando broke my heart a little bit this time. He's CRACKED. Or has he? And Sean saying, I'd been swearing up and down as long as I've known you that you wouldn't turn, and then you did turn. Sean's going to have to deal with his own betrayal by the Organization he gave twenty-five fucking years to, because Sean was in that cabin somebody tried to blow up. Speaking of which, who blew up the cabin?

And the questions we've been turning over madly have been circling around Dom. What's he hiding? He and Dave have some kind of thing going on, and either Dave is lying to Viggo, or he's really in the dark about it. I like that Viggo called Dave on it, because he noticed the weird exchange they had in Chapter 36. Karl noticed one too:

Dave nodded slowly. "I thought Sean was trying to kill him. If I'd known the whole story I . . . well I’m not sure what I would have done. Would've still gotten him out of that square for sure, but . . . "

"Why would Sean try to kill him?" Dominic asked distractedly as he poked at the rug again.

Karl looked over in time to see Dave’s jaw clench. "I don’t know the bloke," he said in a tight voice. "But when Orli forced me to leave him with all of you, Sean had just tied us both up and we were awaiting our executions, yeah? That seems a pretty good reason not to trust him to me."

"Right," Dominic said softly, sounding slightly chastised. "Forgot about that."

"Convenient, isn’t it?" Dave said in a strange voice. "Being able to forget what you don't like remembering."

Karl looked at them both closely as he drove. What the hell had that been about?
-Chapter 35

Keeping in mind there's still that discrepancy about whether or not Dom came in to see them when they were tied up and awaiting their executions. Dom, what are you hiding? In Chapter 5 Viggo mentions that they all had "protective coatings": Viggo's shield was his suspicion, Orlando's his ditziness, Eric's his craziness. In Chapter 5 Viggo hadn't yet deciphered what the other three used, but it looks like Dom's is his innocence. [livejournal.com profile] smartlikejustin mentioned he was based in Germany but seemed clueless about Europe when he and Orlando were there; but somebody said Prague. I think it's likely Dom was leading them around a lot more than Orlando realized. The Six have been shielding him, but he's surprised them every time with the evidence of his instincts and abilities.

There's a baseball game underway right across the street. Hi boys!

See, I'm being as good as I possibly can. I am resisting THE ARCHER until it is completed.

Or until my great floor refinishing project is. Because I want to read it badly, but i deeply suspect the suspense would kill me.

That is indeed admirable. The suspense is pretty heavy, but there's no way I was going to leave it until it was done before I started on it. And the tenterhooks are half the fun! See you when your floor is refinished. ;)

A thought - didn't Dom like, vanish for half an hour before the whole thing went boom? and he was safe outside after it went boom, "having a cig".

Maybe he's a class 2, rather than a class 10!

He did, he totally did, and it's so incredibly convenient. Except for this:

Dominic couldn’t begin to describe how relieved he was at seeing all five men out of the cabin and relatively safe.

The blast had shaken him, but he kept trying to force down the grin that wanted to appear every time he heard his mother’s voice in his head telling him that cigarettes would kill him one day.

It certainly hadn’t been today.

The cigarettes-not-killing-him thing could have been because they'd furnished him with an excuse, but his relief at the other guys not being dead? I don't know. But he could totally be a 2! That whole business where he gets everyone to go over what the ten classes of agent are? Sounds like an example of feigning a lot more ignorance than is actually the case. Obviously he had to be up to something to have been included with the Six in the first place, and so far it doesn't sound like he was affiliated with the Archer, so . . . double-agenthood is likely!

you kids and this archer thing. It makes a girl want to get on board. Also, it's cute.

But do research the netspeek and then publish your Results here, yeah? because I need my own usage explained to me OMG.

*g* Come and play!

research the netspeek and then publish your Results here, yeah? because I need my own usage explained to me OMG.

Hee! I'll do my very level best. And before any results are arrived at, you can bet I'll be whining writing about the research process in excruciating detail. Like coming to conclusions in real time!
