exercises in frustration

Hissing through the rain in front of me is a cute little white car with a bumper sticker that pleads ARMS ARE FOR HUGGING and I think to the driver Yes, I understand, but you'll never make them see, they can't hear you, you are all shouting across paradigms and they are terrible conductors of sound. However forcefully ejected, the words sputter and fade, and there is simply no listening to be done. Minds change by realization, not rationalization.

Annie Dillard does indeed write absolutely amazing prose. I first read Pilgrim two summers ago and immediately went around praising and gibbering, trying to force it on people - most of whom didn't listen. I've read it and others of hers (Teaching a Stone To Talk, For The Time Being) many, many times since.

Thanks for the postscript; I only aim to please.
