For awhile I used to download and save fic onto disks, but I stopped once it occured to me that I rarely went back and read them.
Well, that makes total sense! Why keep all that old baggage behind? I do reread a lot, though. A LOT. And I go through fandoms very quickly, but I also go BACK to fandoms all the time; I want to keep those fics with me, at the ready.
Around this time I'd really discovered archives and how most people posted to them anyways, so I didn't need to save them to disk.
I did this too! But now there are a whole bunch of archives in a bunch of fandoms that are totally gone. :( Plus I started out at a time when I often had either a slow connection to the internet or none at all, and I had to save things locally if I wanted to read them at my leisure.
The past few years have made me very blaise about losing all my information on my computer
Ahh, that's a level of zen I have yet to achieve (sorry about your computer woes! D:). I almost made it a poll question: "On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is 'totally nonchalant' and 10 is 'unhinged', how devastated would you be if you suddenly lost your entire personal fic collection?" I think I'd give myself an 8. And I worry about storing things in the cloud via a third party just the same, that the site will go down, that I'll have to start paying for services, that my information will be lost, etc.
I've been using Read It Later for non-fannish items only, but I too have found that I never go back to things I've saved there. Fic I want to read later I bookmark in a totally separate delicious account, and I do go to it when I'm at loose ends for something to read.
